Commanded by Kapitänleutnant Richard Pohle
While on patrol in the North Atlantic on 13 Aug 1914, U-15 came upon the British war ships;Ajax, Monarch and Orion on maneuvers off Fair Island in the North Atlantic.
U-15 fired a torpedo at the HMS 'Monarch' but missed which alerted the other vessels. To avoid any further engagement U-15 apparently headed east.
The following morning, shrouded in mist U-15 was spotted by the HMS'Birmingham' sitting still in the water as loud hammering noises resonated from her hull.
