SM U -35
German U-Boats Austrian U-Boats

Kptlt. Lothar von Arnauld dela Periera
It is reported that during his submarine career he only fired four torpedoes. He preferred using his 88mm deck gun.
He would fire a round over the victims bow causing the vessel to stop, order the crew into the life boats, boarding the
vessel and examine its cargo and documents; in many cases take the vessel's Captain aboard the U-Boat and then sink the vessel.
This method accounted for sinking 194 vessels, 454,000 tons. Between April and May of 1916, he sank 23 vessels and between July and August
of the same year he sank 54 vessels.
He completed a total of 15 patrols with smU-35.
After the war, he served with the Turkish Navy and then returned to the German Navy in 1939.
He later died in a plane crash near Paris, France.

T.S.S. 'Lake Michigan'
March 1916
“We sailed out on the trade route where I had sailed over many times before and
were accompanied by two escort ships.
One was a minelayer and the other a destroyer both zigzagging in the waters to
prevent German U-boats getting in too close. The
U-boats had developed a reputation in the Atlantic for not caring whether they
torpedoed a ship carrying troops, a hospital ship carrying wounded or a
passenger liner. The armed escort broke off as we headed into open waters and we
were now on our own. It
was
scary to think that somewhere beneath
the surface there could be a U-boat skipper having us fixed in his scope and
ready to press the ‘fire’ button. The captain passed the word around that he
received a signal from the
escort ship that the S.S. ‘Minneapolis’
was
torpedoed twenty miles behind us. It was on the same route we just passed
over.”

U-35

A German U-Boat-35 had stopped a Dutch liner, the S.S. 'Niew Amsterdam' which left Rotterdam on 03 August 1918 was attcked after sailing two days
by U-35 off the Norwegian coast. U-35 shot upon the liner but missed her mark.
The liner then stopped and put a life boat to sea in which theChief Officer took his place to show the ship's papers.
The U-35 disappeared almost immediately when it sighted a vessel on the horizon which appeared to be a British cruiser.
This photo taken from the deck of the S.S. 'Niew Amsterdam' shows the Officers heading for the U-35.
