Long before the advent of today's sophisticated technology used in navigation,
and meteorology, sailors had to rely on paper and pencil math and orally passed on
traditions to predict weather, ocean currents and navigation.
This high interest story presents those skills passed on from an old sailor to a young boy.

Subject: Mathematics
Learning Objective: Determining Area of Working Sails (in square feet)
WORKSHEET ON PAGE 141
To determine the amount of surface a sail contains it is necessary to find the square footage of the sail. To do this you need to know the height and width of each sail and compute that area into square feet. (height times width = area) In the case of triangular shaped sail you determine the square footage by multiplying the base, the length of the bottom of the sail by one-half the height of the sail, the distance from the base to the top of the sail. ( base times 1/2 height.= area). On Spanker sails and other odd shape sails you need to break them down into squares and triangles and then measure them individually and add together.
The Flying Cloud was one of the fastest sailing ships in the world. It could sail from New York around Cape Horn to
San Francisco in 89 days. She was able to make her speed because of the area of her working sails.
