Following November  1916, Pour le Merite's were made of silver or gilt silver due to the prohibition on using gold.

The post-1916 medals were  hollow and made of gilded silver.

The two silver hollow halves were soldered together with some having a small weep hole.

There is considerable controversy regarding the connected u-r in Pour however,

there are known war issued examples with the u-r being connected.

Much apparent wear to features on the front  especially on the fletching of the raised chests of the eagles

with the fletching on the back much sharper as if this PLM was worn under a jump suit. The front also finds stains on the edges of the rays

as if exposed to some sort of pollutant.
